SUMMARY:NRA Basic Pistol
DESCRIPTION:  \nPreregistration required. \nThe topics presented in the NRA Basic Pistol class form the core knowledge and skills used in all pistol shooting activities\, from informal recreational shooting through hunting\, competition and self-defense.  Safety is foundational to the entire course.  Included are segments on gun handling\, shooting positions\, pistol shooting activities\, pistol types\, ammunition\, and selection of pistols\, ammunition and accessories.  I really like the NRA Basic Pistol curriculum.  It’s a comprehensive approach to the basics of firearms training and is great for brand new shooters and for experienced shooters who wish to build a stronger foundation of knowledge and skills. \nThere are no training prerequisites for this class.  The course is open to U.S. citizens age 21 and above that may legally possess a firearm.  Under federal law\, however\, certain non-U.S. citizens are prohibited from participating in this course.    Only non-U.S. citizens who are: (1) lawfully permanent residents (e.g.\, green card holders); (2) refugees; or (3) individuals who have been granted asylum may participate in this course. Students below age 21 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  Please coordinate the attendance of students below the age of 21 with Critical Edge in advance of signing up for the class. \nProgress through the course is not driven by a schedule.  We will move through the curriculum as quickly or slowly as necessary to allow the students to learn the material.  The training goal is to ensure that\, by the end of the course\, all the students have acquired the competence and confidence to safely handle a pistol on their own. \nAll live fire for the Basic Pistol course will be conducted on a one-on-one basis with an NRA certified instructor.  We will start with a .22 caliber pistol and ammunition provided by Critical Edge.  Those students who already have a pistol of their own\, and would like to fire it\, will have an opportunity to do so.  But\, they must bring their own ammunition and notify Critical Edge in advance. \nThe NRA Basic Pistol course will be held within an easy driving distance of Harrisburg\, Mechanicsburg\, and Carlisle\, PA at the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association on the dates below.  We will meet in the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse beginning at 8:00 AM and probably conclude by 6:00 PM.   To ensure close personal attention for each student\, this course is limited to 6 people. \nSpring Class Dates: \n\nMarch 15\, 2023 (Wed)\nApril 2\, 2023 (Sun)\nMay 11\, 2023 (Thur)\n\nPreregistration is required.  To reserve a spot in a class please go to the following to make payment:  https://criticaledge.us/make-a-payment/  The regular fee for the course is $145.00.   There is a 15% off sale for April and May reducing the price to $123.25.  Members of the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association\, veterans and first responders receive an additional $15.00 discount.  The fee for members of the U.S. military on active duty is $75.00.   To finalize registration\, please also send an email (at:  carl.walker@criticaledge.us ) with the following information: \nName as you want it to appear on your certificate; \nMailing address; \nPhone number; \nPlease indicate if you are a member of the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association\, active duty member of the U.S. military\, veteran or first responder; \nThe course title and the date(s) which you wish to attend; \nThe type and caliber of any firearm you want to bring to class; \nA brief description of your previous experience with firearms; and \nYour interests with regard to firearms and any firearms or personal security goals you may have.

SUMMARY:Critical Edge Intermediate Shotgun
DESCRIPTION:Registration closed.   \nContinuing to build on the foundation of safely handling a shotgun acquired in the NRA Basic Shotgun class\, this class is orientated towards the defensive use of a shotgun and includes material on gun handling\, reloads\, malfunctions\, engagement of multiple targets and use of cover and concealment.  It is an ideal stepping-stone to a home defense with shotgun course and a great opportunity for students to polish the skills learned in the home defense class. \nThe drills will be “performance based” to increase the student’s knowledge\, competence and confidence with a shotgun. The drills will encompass rapid movement and other physical activity to push the students to perform under a degree of “stress.” \nThere are no formal training prerequisites for this class.  Students must\, however\, be competent in the safe handling and operation of their firearm.  The course is open to U.S. citizens age 18 and above that may legally possess a firearm. \nProgress through the course is not driven by a schedule.  We will move through the curriculum as quickly or slowly as necessary to allow the students to learn the material.  The training goals of the course are to provide an introductory foundation to enable the student to safely and successfully practice defensive shotgun skills on their own and to prepare them to continue into more advanced training. \nLive fire will be conducted with the student’s shotgun and ammunition.  Expect to shoot 250 rounds during the live fire segment of the class.  Hearing and eye protection are required.  Semi automatic and pump shotguns in either 12 or 20 gauge are recommended for the class.  Single barrel/single shot shotguns and double barrel shotguns will greatly hamper the ability of students to participate in many of the drills and present a considerable barrier to defensive skills development.  A sling\, shotgun mounted shell holder and a body worn shell carrier are all recommended.   An ammunition pouch is also helpful and recommended.  If you are purchasing a shotgun or accessories prior to this course\, check with Critical Edge for some advice about  options before making your purchase. \nThe Critical Edge Intermediate Shotgun course will be held within an easy driving distance of Harrisburg\, Mechanicsburg\, and Carlisle\, PA at the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association on the dates below.  We will meet in the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse beginning at 10:00 AM and probably conclude by 6:00 PM in September and October.  Due to the reduced hours of daylight\, the November class will begin at 9:00AM and conclude about 5:00PM.   To ensure close personal attention for each student\, this course is limited to 9 people. \nSpring class dates: \n\nMarch 22\, 2023  (Wed)\nApril 17\, 2023 (Mon)\nMay 15\, 2023 (Mon)\n\nPreregistration is required.  To reserve a spot in a class please go to the following to make payment:  https://criticaledge.us/make-a-payment/  The regular fee for the course is $110.00.  There is a 15% off sale for classes in April land May reducing the fee to $93.50.  Members of the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association\, veterans and first responders receive an additional  $15.00 discount.  The fee for members of the U.S. military on active duty and students that have taken the class previously is $60.00.  The sale price for students that have taken the class previously is $51.00.  To finalize registration\, please also send an email to:   carl.walker@criticaledge.us.  Please include the following information: \nYour name as you want it to appear on your certificate; \nMailing address; \nPhone number; \nPlease indicate if you are a member of the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association\, a veteran or a first responder; \nThe course title and the date(s) which you wish to attend; \nThe make\, model and gauge of any shotgun you want to bring to class; \nA brief description of your previous experience with firearms; and \nYour interests with regard to firearms and any firearms or personal security goals you may have.

SUMMARY:Critical Edge Intermediate Pistol
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegistration Closed. \nThe Critical Edge Intermediate Pistol class is for students at skill levels from new pistol owners to those who grew up with firearms and want to improve their defensive firearms capabilities.  It is a class designed to bridge the gap between marksmanship on a conventional range and the defensive application of a pistol.  This is an ideal class for someone that has taken a basic pistol class who doesn’t feel they’re quite ready for a home defense or concealed carry course.  It is equally good for an experienced shooter that is new to defensive shooting.   This class is practical pistol training intended to assist participants in achieving much higher levels of proficiency.  Regardless of previous experience it will help to build on the fundamentals of shooting\, foster safety in the handling of firearms and help participants avoid bad habits.  The class goes beyond basic operation and introduces students to the use of a firearm in defensive situations.    This class will reinforce skills learned in Basic Pistol like proper grip\, stance\, sight alignment\, and trigger press\, as well as address common handgun malfunctions\, reloads\, the use of cover and concealment and close quarters application of a defensive firearm.  While the cost of ammunition has dropped considerably from the height of the shortage\, laser pistols will be relied upon as an effective way to learn skills and to reduce ammunition costs. \nThere are no training prerequisites for this class.  Students\, however\, must be competent in the safe handling and operation of their firearm. \nProgress through the course is not driven by a schedule.  We will move through the curriculum as quickly or slowly as necessary to allow the students to learn the material.  The training goals of the course are to provide an introductory foundation to enable for the student to safely and successfully practice defensive skills on their own and to prepare them to continue into more advanced training. \nLive fire will be conducted with the student’s pistol and ammunition.  Expect to shoot 250-300 rounds during the live fire segment of the class.  Hearing and eye protection are required as are two extra magazines or\, if a revolver is to be used\, at least two speed loaders.  A belt mounted magazine or speed load holder is highly recommended. \nThe Critical Edge Intermediate Pistol course will be held within an easy driving distance of Harrisburg\, Mechanicsburg\, and Carlisle\, PA at the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association on the dates below.  We will meet in the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association clubhouse beginning at 9:00 AM and probably conclude by 5:00 PM in September and October.  To ensure close personal attention for each student\, this course is limited to 9 people. \nCourse dates: \n\nMarch 27\, 2023 (Mon)\nApril19\, 2023 (Wed)\nMay 17\, 2023 (Wed)\n\nPreregistration is required.  To reserve a spot in a class please go to the following to make payment:  https://criticaledge.us/make-a-payment/  The regular fee for the course is $110.00.  There’s a 15% off sale going for classes in April and May reducing the fee for the class to $93.5 Members of the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association\, veterans and first responders receive an additional $15.00 discount.  The fee for members of the U.S. military on active duty and students that have previously taken this course is $60.00.  The fee for students that have previously taken teh class is $51.00.  To finalize registration\, please also send an email to:   carl.walker@criticaledge.us.  Please include the following information: \nYour name as you want it to appear on your certificate; \nMailing address; \nPhone number; \nPlease indicate if you are a member of the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association\, an active duty member of the U.S. military\, a veteran\, a first responder\, or if you have taken this class previously; \nThe course title and the date(s) which you wish to attend; \nThe type and caliber of any firearm you want to bring to class; \nA brief description of your previous experience with firearms; and \nYour interests with regard to firearms and any firearms or personal security goals you may have. \n

SUMMARY:Maryland Wear and Carry
DESCRIPTION:  \nRegistration Closed. \nI was excited about Maryland ‘s changes to their concealed carry restrictions.  Last June\, after the Supreme Court struck down New York’s concealed carry restrictions as Unconstitutional\, Maryland recognized that their very similar restrictions were also Unconstitutional.  Accordingly\, they became a “shall issue” state and began issuing permits.  Unfortunately\, on April 11th\, Maryland Governor Moore  signed Senate Bill 1 putting in place sweeping restrictions on concealed carry.  The Maryland approach is like New York’s newest attempts to deny civil rights to Americans.  I had been looking forward to being able to assist people in obtaining a Maryland permit by offering the requisite training.  A quick look at Maryland’s new restrictions convinces me that Maryland ‘s efforts are blatantly Unconstitutional and the state will ultimately lose in court with a decision that they may not continue their Unconstitutional actions.  Until that time\, I’ve taken the Maryland Wear and Carry permit class off the schedule. \nMaryland’s new law makes private property a gun free zone unless the property owner states otherwise\, firearms are banned in numerous public places\, it WAIVES ANY PRIVACY RIGHTS TO APPLICANTS PERSONAL INFORMATION and it reinstitutes their requirement for a “good and substantial reason to wear\, carry\, or transport a handgun.  Their law is doomed.  But\, it’s going to take time to work through the system.  On the positive side\, more and more states are becoming “Constitutional carry” recognizing the legal right to carry a firearm\, either concealed or openly\, without a permit or license.  But\, states like Maryland\, New York\, New Jersey\, Illinois and Hawaii are only likely to go that route kicking and screaming. \nI know a fair number of people were eagerly anticipating obtaining their Maryland permit.  Sorry to take the Maryland class off the schedule.    For now\, I just don’t see any point in people going to the trouble and expense.  I don’t want to take your money if the class won’t do you any good.  Additionally\, you probably don’t want Maryland to release your personal information to the general public. \nIt won’t help with the strongly prohibitionist states such as Maryland\, New York and Illinois\, but\, in addition to being a Maryland Qualified Handgun Instructor\, I’m also certified as a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit Instructor.   A PA permit allows you to carry in thirty one states (fourteen of those with some restrictions).  Obtaining a Utah permit in addition to a PA permit adds Indiana\, Nevada\, Nebraska\, Washington and  Delaware (also with some restrictions)  to the list.  Please let me know if you are interested in attending the Utah class. \n

SUMMARY:Refuse To Be A Victim
DESCRIPTION:  \nPreregistration is Required. \nThe Refuse to Be A Victim program teaches the techniques and tips needed to be alerted to dangerous situations and to avoid criminal confrontation.  It is not a physical self-defense or firearms class.  Rather\, it seeks to help people improve their personal safety practices and to provide insights into the tactics\, techniques and procedures commonly utilized by perpetrators of crime.  It covers valuable information about the psychology of criminal predators\, mental preparedness\, physical security\, home security\, automobile security\, security during travel\, and personal protection devices.  Such awareness is frequently the single most important factor in avoiding becoming a criminal’s victim. \nThe Refuse To Be  A Victim seminar will be held within an easy driving distance of Harrisburg\, Mechanicsburg\, and Carlisle\, PA at the Duncannon Sportsmen’s Association on Saturday April 29\, 2023.  We will start at 10:00 AM and will conclude at approximately 2:00  PM.  But\, depending upon questions\, more or a less time may be required. \nPre-registration is required.  The regular cost of the seminar is $30.00 and $20.00 per person for second and subsequent members of the same household.  Members of the U.S. military on active duty may attend for free.  Second and subsequent members of an active duty household may attend for $10.00 per person.  There is a 15% off sale on classes in April and May reducing the price to $25.50 for the first member of a household\, $17 for second and subsequent members of the same household and $8.50 for  non active duty members of and active dutry household.  You can reserve a spot in the seminar by going to:  www.criticaledge.us/make-a-payment/
