For many people, the term “personal protection” evokes movie images of Bruce Lee or characters such as John Wick with arsenals of weapons. In truth, the use of force is only one element of personal protection and is a last resort. Deterrence, de-escalation, escape, evasion or otherwise avoiding an attack are all preferable resolutions. The NRA’s Personal Protection Outside the Home course focuses on the effective use of a concealed firearm for self-defense outside the home. Included are segments on concealment techniques and devices, presenting the firearm from concealment, utilizing cover and concealment, presentation and movement, point shooting, instinctive shooting , low-light shooting engaging multiple targets and one-hand shooting. These skills form the key capabilities used to counter a life-threatening attack outside the home.
PERSONAL SAFETY WITH CONCEALED CARRY BASICS
The NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home course is a course commonly thought of as basic training for concealed carry. Like all NRA firearms classes, it begins with a review of basic firearms safety and then delves into safety as related to defensive shooting outside the home. Important strategies for personal safety outside the home are presented. The techniques of carrying a concealed pistol are covered. Students have an opportunity to learn how to present a firearm from concealment and to further develop the basic defensive shooting skills learned in Personal Protection Inside the Home. The course also provides training in the development of concealed carry shooting skills, special defensive shooting techniques, legal aspects of concealed carry, self defense and the law and the legal aftermath of a shooting outside the home.
